The Jackson elk herd roams the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Area, and the NER was pivotal in rescuing this majestic herd early in the 20th century. The practice of winter feeding of the elk has been questioned due to health concerns within the herd as cases of brucellosis, foot rot, scabies and other life-threatening diseases become more common, as well as habitat degradation due to overpopulation.
